UNMOGIP
United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan

Our Mission

UNMOGIP helps prevent the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the partition in August 1947, India and Pakistan emerged as independent states. However, the status of Jammu and Kashmir remained contested between the two countries.

Established in 1949, UNMOGIP supervises the strict observance of the ceasefire of 17 December 1971 along the Line of Control separating the contested territory of Indian-Administered Kashmir and Pakistan-Administered Kashmir. Despite successive ceasefire agreements and bilateral commitments, tensions persist. The conflict’s impact has been profound and marked by recurring cross-border incidents, with cycles of tension raising concerns for regional and global security.

For more than seven decades, UNMOGIP has maintained an impartial presence along the Line of Control. In accordance with Security Council Resolution 307 (1971), the Mission monitors developments and investigates ceasefire violation complaints submitted by the parties while operating in a sensitive and complex environment.
