UNMOGIP through photos

This picture is part or a series on the personnel of the U.N. Mission to India and Pakistan. It shows Jean-Charles Valéry (from France), Field Service Member, at Domel Field Observer Station in the Jammu and Kashmir State, located on the Pakistan side, about 30 miles from the cease-fire line. (01 January, 1951, Kashmir) The members of a field team of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan spending a quiet evening in their living quarters at the Tangdhar station. At this station, the military observers and UN radio operator are quartered in a mud hut which they share with the headquarters of an Indian battalion.   The members of the UN team are: Major Emilio Altieri (back to camera), of Uruguay; Major Pierre Jooris (reading), of Belgium; and radio operator Guillermo Encastilla. (01 January, 1955, Kashmir) This picture, taken on the cease-fire line, shows a meeting between Indian and Pakistani officers and members of the U.N. Military Observer Group. The observers were on their way to the cease-fire line, where they were to investigate an incident. (01 January, 1955, Kashmir) A member of the U.N. This gasoline-driven generator is sheltered under a tent outside the observer's building (seen in the background), it provides the electricity needed for the radio-communications with the Group's Headquarters. (01 January, 1955, Kashmir) Military staff of UNMOGIP lower the UN flag draped coffin of Firas Al-Hayali today in Islamabad. The 33-year old Al-Hayali, an IT Network Administrator with UNMOGIP, and his son were killed when the Margala Towers building complex they were in collapsed during the 7.6 magnitude quake that struck northern Pakistan on 8 October. Mr. Al-Hayali was a national of Iraq. (17 October, 2005, Islamabad, Pakistan) Military staff of UNMOGIP and other mourners at the burial of Firas Al-Hayali and his seven-year old son, Hussain Al-Hayali, today in Islamabad. Their mandate is to be a neutral party in the India and Pakistan situation. (20 October, 2005, Bhimbar, Pakistan) From this mountain near Bhimbar, Pakistan, peacekeepers from the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) get a view of the Line of Control that separates the two countries that they are tasked to observe. Their mandate is clear that they are to be a neutral party in the India and Pakistan situation.
